We Are

Advocates.

OUR STORY

Beginning in the Summer of 2003, our parent organization SCOPE established Patient Health Advocates as a child and family resource center at the UCLA 200 Medical Plaza in the waiting room of the Children's Health Center. SCOPE came about when medical students, public health graduate, and undergraduate students saw that there was a need to provide more comprehensive care to its patients and their families.

Advised by Dr. Alice Kuo, head of Medicine-Pediatrics, and Dr. Siyi Yung, pediatrics attending, Patient Health Advocates connects underserved patients to helpful resources in their communities that can improve their health and wellbeing. Advocates are paired with residents and attendings to help improve patient care.

Currently, Patient Health Advocates shadows residents and attendings at UCLA’s Witherbee Foundation Children's Health Center, Medicine-Pediatrics Comprehensive Care Center and Internal Medicine Suite in order to carry out social casework with patients of all sociodemographic statuses, income levels, ethnicities, and ages.

OUR VALUES

Our core work aims to empower families with information and the help they need to live healthy lives. Through our services, we actively listen to our patient’s stories, provide them with resources, and work with their doctors to see their needs met. We also seek to educate our members and foster a supportive community for them to thrive.

Empowerment & Education

We always continue to improve ourselves, our services, our resources. We rely on data to improve our resource database, our intake process, our resource delivery. We are go-getters who see problems and implement unique solutions.

Research & Innovation

We believe that working collaboratively yields better results than working alone. Our success and continual growth depends upon the collective passion, energy, and contributions of all our members. We combine our shared skill sets and knowledge to best serve our patients and accomplish real, impactful change.
