Frequently Asked Questions

Caseworking is the process of helping patients connect with resources that address needs affecting their health and well-being. PHAs accompany physicians in clinic and, at the end of each visit, speak directly with patients to understand their needs. Within two weeks of the appointment, volunteers email the patient a personalized list of personalized resources and services. For example, if a patient has difficulty getting to the hospital, a caseworker might identify low-cost shuttle programs or other local transportation services that can help them attend future appointments.

Volunteers are required to attend at least one four-hour clinic shift every two weeks during the academic quarter, excluding holidays and finals week. Volunteers who would like to spend more time in clinic can also sign up for additional open shifts as they become available.

Clinical volunteering/caseworking is the main focus of SCOPE PHA. Every member is expected to volunteer in clinic at least once every other week, where they shadow a physician and work directly with patients to help address their social needs.In addition to these clinic shifts, each member is assigned to a project team at the beginning of the year based on their unique, personal interests. These teams work on different initiatives within SCOPE PHA and give members opportunities to contribute in areas, such as research, graphic design, and community outreach.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2027.Volunteers must enroll and fully participate in our Fall Class.

In addition to the required clinic shift every two weeks, SCOPE PHA members attend a one-hour in-person meeting each Wednesday from 7-8PM. Meetings alternate between general meetings and project team meetings, during which members work with their assigned teams. Members may also have occasional responsibilities outside of meeting times like writing emails to patients and completing tasks for their project team.Community volunteering is another important part of SCOPE PHA. While these opportunities are optional, we encourage members to be involved through our partnerships with local soup kitchens, street-side clinics, shelters, and other community organizations.

Fall Class is a required training course for all new SCOPE PHA volunteers. The course is taught by senior PHA members and introduces students to key principles of public health, the caseworking process, and the skills needed to work with patients in clinic. Students will also hear from guest speakers from a variety of health professions and fields. During the Fall 2026 quarter, the class will be held in-person on Thursdays from 6-8PM. Students who complete the course will receive 2 units of academic credit for a letter grade.

Strong applicants demonstrate a genuine interest in SCOPE PHA’s mission and a commitment to public health, patient advocacy, and community service. Each year, we welcome students at every stage of their undergraduate education and from a wide range of backgrounds. Previous clinical or hospital experience is not required. In fact, many of our members had never volunteered in a hospital before joining SCOPE PHA. We ultimately are looking for people who are compassionate, eager to learn, and committed to being active members of our organization.
